Dec 2nd The Holly King

The actual origin of holly as a unique Christmas decoration may date back to Celtic times. Celtic myths refer to two figures, the Holly King and the Oak King. The holly king ruled from the summer solstice to the winter solstice. At the winter solstice, the oak king fought and defeated the holly king, thus bringing the new cycle of spring and summer fertility forward again into the new year. The Holly King was depicted as a big man decked in green and carrying a large staff of holly. Many portrayals of Charles Dickens' Ghost of Christmas Past on the silver screen are eerily reminiscent of the ancient Holly King, including a crown of holly and a holly staff, club or wand carried in the King's right hand.

My advent Calendar

I love an advent Calendar it's the perfect start to the Holiday season. When we were younger my Mom used to make us one with special little bits in. It wouldn't always be chocolate sometimes it would be a poem or a bauble for the tree whatever it was it seemed magickal to me so I've decided to make my own online Calendar to count the days down so today begins with Dec 1st  and it is a garden quote I love.

"From December to March, there are for many of us three gardens -
the garden outdoors,
the garden of pots and bowls in the house,
and the garden of the mind's eye."

The first snow of Winter

Am I the only person who cheers when they see the first snow of winter? well we got ours today in the UK. OK so it was a light sprinkling but its here.I love how snowflakes can turn a bare canvas into a magickal creation. I love how everything looks bright and sparkly even the bare trees come alive.

I love to dress up snuggly in winter clothes set off walking with my camera and start snapping, then arrive home to a cup of hot soup nothing finer in life. I fear its here a little early for a white christmas but todays sprinkling has now got me in festive mode. Help now to start panicking.
